A once in a lifetime opportunity to join a committed racing team and take part in the toughest offshore race in the UK.
The coveted RORC Round Britain and Ireland (RBI) Race was last sailed in 2014; the prestigious event only occurs every four years. To date, there have only ever been five non-stop, RORC RBI races, so to say you've raced in one is quite an achievement.
The Round Britain and Ireland race package is a fully crewed, skippered event. Starting and finishing in the Solent, the team will race clockwise around the entire British Isles and Ireland without stopping, covering about 2,500 miles in total. The diverse international fleet you compete against will attract seasoned RORC members as well as less experienced sailors. The RBI race is a 'must' for serious offshore sailors and is regarded as a real challenge.
RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) is most famous for hosting the classic Fastnet Race every two years. During non-Fastnet years, RORC organises various alternative long distance races. For 2018, it's the big one, the RBI. Many charter companies offer places onboard for high profile events such as the RORC Fastnet. However, only the elite few have the experience, yachts and staff required to undertake the challenge of the Round Britain and Ireland race. In the last two RBI races (2010 and 2014), only one other sea school even made it to the start line. In 2006, the Principal and his team from this company won the race in class and overall.
For such a challenging offshore race campaign, there are some pre-requisites:
Minimum age 18
900+ Miles of offshore racing experience, (ideally a Fastnet campaign or similar)
RYA Sea Survival
ISAF Offshore Safety
The RBI will push you to the limits, for that reason every crew member is interviewed by the Company Principal before being accepted onto the team. Interview can be by phone or face to face.
Operating for over a decade from its base in the Solent, this company offers a great range of training, racing and mile-building voyages in the UK, and, if you prefer warmer climes- Europe and the Caribbean.
As a recognised RYA Training Centre, their ethos is to deliver the best possible training at a fair price. Their fleet of seven yachts is also available for skippered, bareboat, corporate and race charter in coastal, offshore and ocean environments.
Towards the beginning and end of the UK summer sailing season the operator moves one of its fleet around an Atlantic circuit in pursuit of classic yacht races and the prizes therein. This provides a great opportunity to choose from one of their mile-building delivery trips (and notch up an impressive entry in your personal logbook) or, from a temporary base in the Canary Islands, to enjoy a week’s inter-island sailing in sunshine and a good breeze.
Departing the Canaries, the programme then takes in the iconic transatlantic ARC Race to St Lucia in time for a warm winter of fine racing events in the Caribbean – shorts and t-shirts at the ready!
Their fleet comprises a range of typically 30’ – 43’ modern production cruising and cruiser-racer yachts providing mod cons and comfort as well as an out and out racing machine.
